Hi Justin, thanks for this, very helpful. I have a couple of questions.

What happens to distributions?
If we migrate Distribution Servers do application and update distributions get migrated?
If we choose to have new DPs for the new site do we have to distribute everything after migration?

Is a backup & restore the best option for PatchMyPC?

Hey Mike,

Yeah, that should work. Just be aware if you upgrade the OS from 2016 to 2019/2022 and you use third-party updates, be aware if this scenario: https://patchmypc.com/duplicate-patch-my-pc-category-listed-in-software-update-point-products-tab#:~:text=The%20duplicate%20categories%20are%20caused,vendor%20category%20in%20the%20database.

Thanks for all the great videos, Justin! I have a similar question to Michael and Gary. Are the steps in Scenario 3 still valid if your new and old SUPs are running on different OS, thus different versions of WSUS? I’m concerned about DB corruption if I connect the new WSUS to the shared / remote DB.

deployment trusted root certificate and sccm client certificate will be the same
how to create trusted root certificate and sccm client certificate
sccm webserver certficate has to go only IIS (SCCM site role + primary site server)

Great video and informative thank you, just one question please, what happens to the collections that were created on the CAS and the other Primary Site that got removed does the remaining Primary Site take ownership of them or do they get deleted as well, so basically any custom collections that were created with custom queries?

CMG is failed to convert from Classic Deployment to VMSS, it throws an error “unable to connect cloud service” is there something i am missing here.

Hey Justin,

First of all, thanks a lot for sharing knowledge by creating such wonderful content.

We are setting up new MECM Infra (CAS and two Primary Sites) to support around 175K endpoints across the US geo locations.
Based on the best practices recommended by MS we are thinking of setting up Shared WSUS DB for about 7-8 SUPs in our new architecture.

I have the following questions:

1) We are setting up a remote site system server for CAS SQL Site DB with 16 CPU cores and 96GB or Physical Memory. Do you recommend to use the same server for the Shared WSUS DB? If yes, do you think we might have to bump up either the CPU cores or RAM?

2) Do all SUPs need the internet connectivity for the catalog synchronization?

3) Will all WSUS servers share the Content location as well?

Hello Justin. Now that’s public service 🙂
In my case, I’m going to migrate to a more recent OS and from SQL 2012 to SQL 2019. In the video, which dates back to 2018, you mentioned that you were migrating WSUS to a more recent database, which worked, but which did not was recommended or not documented by Microsoft. Is this premise still true at the moment? If so, tell me if this is the right procedure to migrate WSUS:
1. before the backup, uninstall the “software update point” role;
2. do not recover the SUSDB database because when creating the service a new one will be created;
3. do not copy/restore the “X:\WSUS” folder;
4. after everything is restored, install the “software update point” role again and force synchronization.
Is this it or do you have any other advice?

One thing that is missing from this video is the requirement to add the Trusted Root CA into the, now named, Communication Security tab of the Primary Site.

Without this machines will not be able PXE boot. Took a lot of digging to find out why that wasn’t working.

Excellent video though, incredibly helpful!

Thank you for the instructional video, it is very helpful. I had a question which kind of echoes Michael’s comment. In our situation we are needing to migrate our SUP from a windows 2012 r2 server to server 2019. Doing an in-place OS upgrade is not an option. I am wondering if this affects the 3 scenarios you have described? It seems like there are limitations/problems moving wsus installation from older OS to newer version?
